Write what you know. That’s why, when singer-songwriter Kyle Warren comes to the piano to compose a song, what emerges is a response to an inspiration that demanded to be set to verse and melody. Ranging from the rocker “Money Man” to the poignant and orchestral “One More Perfect Moment,” the album “Making It Plain” is a tour de force of songs and feelings that connect to the heart. It is music built note by note and phrase by phrase on real moments in time and turning points in lives that can do nothing less but reveal the inner workings of the person who was driven to write it.
Turning points, yes. And dreams too as the hopeful “Lisbon” demonstrates. “But through troubled times and deadlines / I spend my time thinking of you / And what it would be like in Lisbon.” Certainly not a call to retreat--but a bold statement to restart, recharge or rekindle a sense of adventure. And what greater adventure is there than falling in love no matter where you are?
For the song “My Father’s Coat,” Kyle reaches into his own family history to paint a portrait of life in the open spaces where what you owned you essentially carried on your horse and the beauty of the sunset was reward for your accomplishments at the end of day. By showing that the proverbial mountains in the distance of that time mirror our own, the ever present drive to carry on is alive and well in the current generation.
Other songs also reveal the person as well as the craftsman at work who seeks to draw the listener in by touching on the very real things that we all have experienced in one way or another. The title track “Making It Plain” declares in no uncertain terms that sometimes the greatest strength is found in the decision to move on.
Kyle’s love of music began early on in life and set the tone for how he most wanted to express himself. Growing up in southern California has so much to offer, so many things vying for attention, but it was music and performing that really took hold of him at an early age. Influences came from rock & roll to classical music. The expressions of both, he found, could be powerful to be sure.
Beethoven could rattle your cage just as much as Lennon if you listened intently to what both artists were expressing with their music—no matter the span of time that separated them historically. So, the effect on the young boy who looked up to both was profound. As time went by and either composing or performing was the order of the day, he still looked back on those formative times to remember the passion that is needed to make your point of view stand out to the listener.
Along with producer and bassist Jerry Adamowicz and drummer Mike Weiland, Kyle presents songs on “Making It Plain” that either reflect aspects of his own life or recount a real world experience. A history in song that touches on the universal while revealing the personal.
Having been involved with music for much of his life, including television theme music production (together with Adamowicz)--most notably Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest for many years, American Bandstand specials and Notes from the Road-- Kyle also has a great love of history and science and can usually be found talking about and discussing these subjects late into the night. He lives in Southern California.
