Tina Martyn is an award winning Australian singer-songwriter and musician who in her teens enjoyed radio 2 hits as a progressive country music artist and achieved respect as an outstanding guitarist sharing the stage with her old friends Keith Urban and guitar legend Tommy Emmanuel being sponsored by both Fender and Takamine Guitars at just 17 years of age. Moving away from country, Tina has since evolved into a pop/folk/rock song driven artist of deep musicality and song perspective that connects strongly with women, supported by her powerful pitch-perfect vocals and guitar playing that places that her among the best female artists of rock.

Janelle Nadeau

In the summer months, 28-year-old Janelle Nadeau operates large machinery at her family's grain farm in Fannystelle, Manitoba. Working the fields in a combine or swather is an interesting juxtaposition compared to the remainder of the year. Janelle who is based in Vancouver tours around the Lower Mainland and Western Canada as a professional harpist. She is now branching out even further with the release of her debut CD.  These Roads is a 12-song showcase of Janelle's passion for song-writing , harp-playing and singing. Most of the songs are Janelle's own original compositions with a few others co-written with help of other talented musicians. As well, a few traditional instrumental tunes are included. 

The album has soul, contains heart-felt stories and features multiple instruments to make an album that will reshape the way you think about the classical instrument. Throughout the CD, instruments such as guitar, drums, cello and flute complement Janelle on various tracks. These different sounds really help to shape and develop the songs.

These Roads is an album that embodies the paths Janelle has traveled in her life thus far; it is a representation of her experiences collected along the roads navigated both at home and around the world.  Most notably, Janelle's time in Rwanda and her encounter with the power of forgiveness inspired this muscial journey. “I am so excited that this album represents the unveiling of all my musical and life experiences.” 

All of Janelle's songs have been inspired by experiences in her life and "Dirt on Your Hands" is no exception.  When Janelle returns to the prairies to help with harvest, she is reminded of her roots and where she comes from. There seems to be something about working the land and being untouched by the madness of the city that is calming and inspiring. Growing up, Janelle spent a lot of time with her family as everyone was on the farm and pitched in to get things done.  There is a satisfaction in accomplishing tasks on the farm and a "salt of the earth" feeling one gets when working with soil.  A distinct work ethic that is instilled in everything Janelle does because of her upbringing. 

While this is Janelle's first CD, she is already an accomplished musician. In 2008, Janelle graduated from the Harp Performance Program at the University of British Columbia. She has been touring western Canada and the Yukon for the last eight years with the acclaimed music group Winter Harp, which performs Celtic, medieval, and classical music. In addition she has toured with the Canada National Youth Orchestra, Home Routes, Manitoba Arts Council and has played with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. She has even backed up Kanye West during a Vancouver concert and regularly performs with the Vancouver Opera.

Janelle is also especially proud of her work with the Health Arts Society, and has done about 200 concerts at care homes, hospitals, and palliative centres. “The elderly and sick of our community are the ones who cannot get out to hear live music and who may need it most.  This is why it is so important to bring music to them.”

Janelle's interesting musical history has earned the respect and notice in the media. Winnipeg radio host Ace Burpee (Virgin Radio 103) named Janelle one of 100 Most Fascinating Manitobans of 2013 (Janelle was #51 to be precise). Being selected as one of five finalists in the On the Coast region of CBC Radio’s Searchlight contest with her song Leavin’ was another recent accomplishment of which Janelle is proud.

The talent and work ethic Janelle employs is reflected throughout much that she does- whether it be music or related to her work in the fields. Janelle’s small town family farming roots, coupled with her humorous and charismatic persona, guarantee engaging music that captures the hearts of any audience.

Why Recording labels Still Matter

Around the turn of the century, it looked as if the record label's days were numbered. The internet promised to cut out the middleman between band and fan, Napster facilitated free downloading of music at the click of a button, and industry heavyweights such as Creation's Alan McGee predicted that the majors were going the way of the dinosaurs. But today, the UK's indie labels are flourishing. "I firmly believed five years ago that there wouldn't be labels; that the internet was going to make us obsolete," says Mark Bowen of Wichita. "The principal reason that hasn't happened is the bands themselves. Bands want that sense of belonging – they want to feel like they're part of something bigger, part of a community."

It's barely an exaggeration to say that UK music culture in the 80s and 90s was a story of independent labels. Rough Trade signed the Smiths and turned indie into a genre. Mute happened upon a bunch of Basildon teenagers named Depeche Mode and took synthpop to the world. Earache, founded in 1985 by Digby "Dig" Pearson in a Nottingham bedroom, discovered Napalm Death, and invented grindcore. A trusted label logo, says Pearson, is a stronger recommendation than anything Spotify's algorithm can cook up. "Tech culture doesn't understand music; it's just data to them," he says. "Indies exist because we understand the music-making process, back artists with finances, empower them with the knowledge of how to get the music out to fans."

Running an indie in 2014 is "all hands on deck", says Mairead Nash, who runs Luv Luv Luv Records. "Anything you do with the artist comes under the label umbrella now, whether it's TV, booking shows, putting records out, online – whatever it takes to make it work. I feel like this era is like punk again – it's quite hard to sell records now, so if you come up with a way of doing it, you own it."

Indie labels are "the risktakers, the pioneers", says Joe Daniel of Angular Recording Corporation, who cites the revived interest around vinyl and cassettes as proof that the idea of a label still resonates. He organises London's annual Independent Label Market, which is preparing for its fifth year. "It's been a big success, and that's testament to how much effort people put into the products that they sell. Ninja Tune made a zoetrope out of a 12-inch record, you've got labels giving away free download codes with a banana, handmade mix tapes, all sorts. There's a real sense of fun to it." The importance of such grassroots activity shouldn't be overlooked, says Bowen. "Major labels do TV shows, they do pop artists, and they really haven't got interest in building careers – growing a band from 10 to 15 to 50,000 sales just isn't a scale they operate on. The fact that indies still care about that, and can also deliver the Adeles, the Arctic Monkeys… I think they're more important than ever."

"What's great about independent labels is that they're all different from each other," says Mute founder Daniel Miller. "The only way we can survive is putting out great music. Of course you have to be flexible, keep up with new platforms of distribution, marketing and so forth, but without the music, there's nothing."

Special Guests has released "Studio Six: The Cockroach Sessions"

Special Guests has released "Studio Six: The Cockroach Sessions", a previously unreleased album, and now released digitally for the first time. 

The Boston-based band had released a self-titled CD on Canned Peaches Records in 2011, and later several singles. The CD had been 2 years in the making and features superb vocal performances by Zoe Alpert, Craig Carter, and Suzanne McNeil. 

The project began when songwriter Al Pechulis met Zoe and Rick Alpert, while performing at the Frank Withey Memorial Scholarship Foundation concerts near Boston. Zoe particularly liked Al’s original songs, and after Al gave her a CD of original material, the trio met on a winter’s night in 2009 and knew this would be something special. 

Pechulis had successes in the past, recording records for London Records and Jeff Lynne’s (ELO, Traveling Wilburys) private label, Jet Records, which was distributed by worldwide by United Artists. 

After disappointing record sales, Al gave up and got into computer software. In 1986, Al began playing again with bassist David Karahalis and drummer Doug Parks. Al had always sung his own songs, but in 1995, developed an incurable vocal disorder called Spasmodic Dysphonia, and could no longer keep pitch.

Hearing Zoe sing sparked Al’s determination to produce another record. After recording 5 songs, Zoe became pregnant and took a leave of absence from the band. From that point on, Al brought in several fine singers and musicians to complete the record, and thus the name, Special Guests.
